An Allen-Bradley Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is an industrial device used to control the speed, torque, and direction of AC electric motors. Allen-Bradley is a brand owned by Rockwell Automation, and their VFDs—sold under the PowerFlex product line—are widely used in manufacturing, HVAC, pumping systems, conveyors, and other automation applications.
A VFD regulates motor speed by controlling the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to the motor. It allows for:
-
Variable motor speed (instead of full on/off)
-
Energy savings, especially in fan and pump systems
-
Soft starting and stopping (reduces mechanical wear)
-
Improved process control
-
Overload and fault protection
