Double-pole, double-throw (DPDT) switches have two contacts, one normally open, one normally closed, and one common terminal, which allow wiring into two separate loads that activate at the same set points. The DPDT switch can handle two energized circuits at once, allowing the user to turn on one appliance while turning off another with one flick. DPDT switches are often used for switching mains’ electricity, separating the neutral and live connections. They can also be connected like a reversing switch for an electric motor, achieving reverse polarity in a more controlled way.
